B.C. Lions offer discounted tickets to support Langara athletics department

The B.C. Lions are giving Langara College students the chance to see the Vancouver-based football club play at a discounted rate while also supporting the college’s athletic department.

The Lions offered tickets to the Oct. 4 game and will continue to sell tickets for the home game versus the Calgary Stampeders at BC Place up until the Nov. 1 game day.

Which seats are available for purchase?

Students and faculty can purchase an unlimited amount of tickets in the lower touchdown end zone for $33, lower touchdown corner for $42 and upper red zone for $60.

They are also offering a special section that is not open to the public where students can sit on the coaches sidelines for $78.

Why buy tickets?

There is roughly $10 of savings per ticket and of the ticket sales, $3 will go toward Langara’s athletics department.

“It’s a great opportunity because your proximity to our team is very close and because of the accessibility of the SkyTrain,” said Hermon Tesfaghebriel, sales representative with the Lions. “I thought it -made perfect sense for people to come out and support the Lions.”

Jake McCallum, acting director of athletics and intramurals, said the program is a chance for the Lions to boost community involvement.

“If (the Lions) can help out Langara or Langara athletics, I think it’s a great idea,” he said. “They’re one of the bigger shows in town and if we can attach our name to them . . . it’s a huge benefit to us.”

The department does not have the money earmarked for anything specific, but the extra cash will be put toward the athletics that need it most, McCallum added.

Ticket sales were disappointing for the Oct. 1 game, having sold no tickets due to a lack of advertising before the first game.

But Tesfaghebriel hopes the discount program will be more successful for the next game.
