Langara Falcons’ men’s basketball team off to a stunning start

Newly appointed head coach Paul Eberhardt has begun his first season at Langara successfully, leading the men to a 14-1 start and ranking second in the nation.

Eberhardt took over for Jake McCallum in May, after McCallum resigned to become the athletics director.

“When Jake approached me about the job I wasn’t sure. I had done 10 years in the league and I just didn’t see myself coming back, but I always said that the one college I would go coach at would be here,” said Eberhardt.

Eberhardt discovered his love for coaching at McGee Secondary School after breaking his ankle when he was 16 and was asked to assist his coach.

From there he attended school for a teaching degree, coached several championship teams and spent 10 years in the Pacific Western Athletic Association.

Up-tempo basketball recipe for success

“One of the things that my teams are generally known for is playing a very up-tempo, very fast break style of basketball,” Eberhardt said when asked about his coaching style.

His players, such as guard Glenn Ruby, love their time with the new coach.

“He makes sure we are all working towards the same goal,” Ruby said. “He really enhances the family dynamic, and brings the team together.”

Centre Matt Madewan had Eberhardt as a coach at R.C. Palmer.

“He notices everything,” Madewan said. “Paul recognizes players strengths and knows how to show them.”

In 2011, Eberhardt led his team at R.C. Palmer Secondary School to the AAA Championship, and feels confident he can do the same for Langara.

Eberhardt believes he can deliver championship

“We have the right pieces in place,” Eberhardt said. “You have to have really good players, and you have to have a lot of hard work, which we do.”

“My next win will be my 100th win in the college league in PacWest,” said Eberhardt.

The former Cap College coach admitted it “would be kind of fun if it came on Friday against my old school.”

The men broke their winning streak after a recent loss to Columbia Bible College, but Eberhardt came through on his 100th win with a 90-63 victory over Capilano Unversity.
